Organ-based meridians or channels run throughout the body. Qi (chee) is the energy force that travels through the meridians. Qi consists of spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical life. Health is influenced by this flow of Qi through the meridians. If there is a disruption of flow in the Qi, a person then feels symptoms or becomes ill. Points are needled on the meridians to ensure proper flow of Qi, therefore removing symptoms and restoring health.
According to western medicine, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influences the body’s own internal regulating system.
As Qi consists of many components, when using acupuncture, it is important to also address other factors that can disrupt Qi. These factors include nutrition and mental state of mind.
Acupuncture may be used alone or as an adjunct to other therapies such as the chiropractic adjustment.
